Straddling the equator Mt Kenya is permanently snow capped. The glaciated cliffs and glaciers are strikingly awe inspiring remnants of a massive extinct volcano that was active million of years ago.
Mt Kenya has 3 main peaks namely Nelion, Batian and Point Lenana. Out of three Mt Kenya main peaks, only point lenana is easy and can be attempted by any able mountain trekker since it's walk-able. The other two peaks pose a challenging climb because they are relatively technical requiring skills and ability to attempt.
In spite of the massive size of Mt Kenya, very over ambitious mountain climbers can gain altitude rapidly resulting to high altitude sickness. When climbing Mt Kenya altitude sickness can be a major problem, thus it's advisable for trekkers to acclimatize by taking at least 3 days to scare Point Lenana which is the shortest route.
When climbing any mountain caution and safety measure should be adhered to and climbing Mt Kenya is no exception. Unfortunately accidents do occur ranging from minor injuries to fatal ones. In case you not medically fit or luck the right gear to ascent. DO NOT attempt climbing Mount Kenya.
Mt Kenya habitat is characteristic of dense rainforest and dense thickets of bamboo forest around the Mt Kenya National Park, as well as moorland, giant lobelia and heather, alpine meadows on higher altitudes. Mt Kenya National Park is home to a variety of wild animals including; elephants, black rhinos, leopards, cape buffalos, Colobus monkeys, antelopes, tree hyrax, giant forest hog , bongo, white-throated guegnon, zebra and waterbuck among others.
Separately Mt Kenya has about 20 glacial tarns (Small Mount Kenya Lakes) of varying sizes. The two commonly known Mt Kenya lakes are Lake Rutundu - on the slopes of the mountain, Lake Alice which is located inside the Mt Kenya Park, Lake Ellis and Lake Michaelson at 3500m and 4000 meters respectively as observed on the Chogoria Mt Kenya climbing route. The alpine country surrounding the Mt Kenya Lakes is strikingly awesome. In addition both lakes are stocked with rainbow trout thus making for a good spot for trout fishing and fly fishing expeditions.
