Tana River Whitewater Rafting

A high action whitewater rafting thrills and spills experiences approximately 100 kilometers away from Nairobi. Tana River is more popular due to long stretches of white water, scenic beauty, and a prolific bird-life.

Tana River offers all Classes of whitewater rafting except Class 6. That said, all levels of rafters from beginners to more seasoned and extensively experienced rafters are catered for.

The rvier is powerful characterized by large "pool drops" type whitewater rapids followed by gentler stretches. Its three huge rapids are awesome and are popular with rafters of class IV and class V levels who have nicknamed them as follows Captains Folly, Can of Worms - due to it's 90 degree bends in succession, and Sphinter Flexor.

Beginners and intermediary level rafters will appreciate the first 3 km of Class II to Class III white water rapids, immediately followed by a 6 kilometer stretch of Class I whitewater rapids which are not technical but require good padding skills. This class range will allow rafters to enjoy the scenic beauty, and the thriving birdlife .

The final 7 kilometer leg is the realm of rafters with high level of fitness, extensive experience and maneuvering skills because it's exceedingly difficult characterized by long and violent rapids, extremely obstructed riverbed, presences of big drops, strong violent current on steep gradients

After a successful run 4 - 5 hours later it's back to camp for barbeque lunch and plenty of beer and soft drinks to celebrate with. Whitewater rafting in Tana River is a one day affair but truly a memorable due to it's high levels of adrenaline rush and excitement.

What to bring

• Clothes for rafting in such as Shorts and a t-shirt are ideal
• Good fitting shoes or sandals (NOT flip flops)
• Sun cream
• Towel if wanting a warm shower after the trip
• Dry clothes to get into after the rafting
• Over night gear
